MEDIREST AT ADDENBROOKE'S HOSPITAL
Medirest is the cleaning and housekeeping service provider for Addenbrooke’s Hospital, a centre of excellence within the Cambridge Teaching Hospital and NHS Trust. One of the top hospitals in the UK and a thriving NHS Foundation Trust, it has over 1,250 beds and around 7,000 staff – the services delivered by Medirest are essential for ensuring the highest level of specialist healthcare.
In 2012, Medirest installed a new generation of an innovative laundry system, coupling barrier machines and OTEX ozone disinfection to wash microfibre. Combining the hygiene benefits of industrial size machines with the green efficiency of cold-water OTEX ozone disinfection, has had a significant impact on the amount of water used by the Trust, which processes approximately 11,000 items of microfibre per day.
“We opted for OTEX because we wanted to enhance the ‘green’ efficiency of laundering microfibre on such a huge scale. The cold-water ozone disinfection process means we can do that without compromising on patient care…in fact, by utilising the system and segregating dirty/clean mops and cloths via barrier washers, we have been able to make our infection control protocols more robust than ever,” said Anna Hallas, Domestic Manager for Medirest.
The Benefits of Installing OTEX
Microfibre supplier guidelines generally assert that a wash temperature of between 60°C and 95°C is needed to decontaminate their products after each use and maintain efficacy. However, advancements in cold-water laundering mean that thermal disinfection should no longer be seen as the only go-to solution.
Above all, disinfection cannot be guaranteed (spore-borne bacteria cannot be fully eradicated using this heat-reliant method) and as for the physical impact, too much heat during laundering can destroy man-made fibres and reduce their effectiveness. Shorter overall cycles – with no need for heating time or a pre-wash programme – have also reduced water usage.
OTEX, a game-changing ozone innovation conceived by laundry specialist JLA, has blazed the trail for sites that need to squeeze every drop of commercial use out of their mop heads and cleaning cloths – whilst cutting water usage, reducing utility bills as a whole and enhancing infection control.
The system is most effective in ‘cold’ water (ambient temperatures), and so reduces the need to heat water in the common process of thermal laundering (Rice, 2009). As such, ozone injection decreases the carbon footprint of the wash process.
Medirest’s mop laundry at Addenbrooke’s Hospital found that the OTEX mop programme offered them incredible cost savings on hot water, reduced their cold water usage by 21 percent and their overall cold water usage by 35%.
