For health and social care organisations, laundry best practices go beyond basic cleaning and stain removal.

The safe and efficient cleaning of contaminated laundry is vital in such settings – with a swathe of guidelines in place to safeguard and maintain hygiene standards.

Of course, the success of laundry equipment processes in hospitals and similar healthcare facilities hinges on a range of factors – from the training of key personnel to the equipment available and even the layout of the room itself. As such, there is often room for improvement, which is why we’ve put together this essential guide on reducing the risk of contamination in healthcare laundries.

Hospital laundry layout: The importance of ‘dirty’ and ‘clean’ areas

In hospitals, care homes and other healthcare facilities, it’s vital that infected linens are kept separate from clean, freshly laundered items. And there is no space for half measures here; your laundry must have designated areas for ‘dirty’ and ‘clean’ garments to come in and out with no risk of cross-contamination.

‘Dirty’ laundry zones are where garments and linens enter the facility before they’re sorted and washed by trained personnel wearing the correct PPE. ‘Clean’ areas, meanwhile, are designated spaces for drying and ironing clean items before they’re returned to circulation.

Laundry room processes

The process of sorting and storing contaminated laundry

If your facility handles a lot of contaminated laundry, you’ll need safe and consistent processes in place to sort and store infected items before they can be laundered.

Utilising the FIFO approach of first in, first out, any heavily soiled or infected items should be handled as a priority, reducing the likelihood of cross-contamination. Of course, personnel must also ensure that items are sorted by colour and garment type, with infected items placed in red bags to make ensure they’re easy to identify.

Maintaining hygiene in a healthcare laundry washing area

The area where your commercial washing machines and professional tumble dryers operate is the focal point of your laundry facility, and also the place where cross-contamination is most likely to occur. As such, it’s vital that guidelines for laundry in healthcare facilities are followed, ensuring that contaminated and clean items are kept completely segregated with no chance of cross-contamination.

The value of barrier washing machines in a hospital laundry facility

Since contaminated items must be kept separate from clean garments in healthcare laundries, the easiest way to achieve this during the wash cycle is by using a barrier washing machine.

Barrier washers feature two doors and two entry and exit points, effectively allowing you to place contaminated items in one side and bring clean linens out of another. The physical partition afforded by these industry-standard machines makes them indispensable appliances for maintaining peak hygiene standards in health and social care laundry facilities.

How does OTEX technology improve hygiene standards in healthcare facilities?

Removing germs and bacteria is important in all commercial laundries, but doubly so in healthcare settings. As such, investing in a barrier washing machine with in-built OTEX cleaning capabilities provides a reliable means of reducing harmful bacteria, even at trace levels.

OTEX is our patented aqueous ozone disinfection system that is capable of killing 99.9% of germs during standard laundry cycles. It’s an effective alternative to traditional thermal disinfection, removing all traces of harmful micro-organisms that may be present in heavily soiled and contaminated laundry.

We hope this guide has offered some food for thought on how to improve processes and reduce the risk of contamination in your laundry facility. If you feel it’s time to upgrade your equipment and rethink your healthcare laundry setup, speak to our laundry experts today.

If your boiler has come to the end of its serviceable life and you’re looking to replace it, what’s the best way to reduce your carbon emissions without losing performance?

Save with an A-rated boiler system

Replacing your existing boiler like-for-like is an obvious way to meet your building’s heating requirements, as you’ll simply swap out the unit and continue to use your radiators throughout the year. Taking this route is likely to be more convenient, and the install should be straightforward enough to keep costs to a minimum.

Going for another traditional boiler can still bring efficiency benefits, too. By installing a modern, A-rated boiler, your building can be made more energy efficient – especially if your existing boiler is older, or of a lesser grade. In some cases, we see 70% efficient boilers replaced with 98% efficient boilers (depending on the manufacturer), while newer features such as weather compensation and improved zone controls help to realise greater energy savings.

Target higher carbon savings with a hybrid system

If you want to take greater steps to reduce your property’s carbon usage, without necessarily investing in a full alternative system (with its potentially higher costs), it could be time to consider a hybrid system.

Hybrid heating systems combine air or ground source heat pumps with a traditional non-renewable heat source. This could be the existing modern boiler, or a new boiler installed as part of the hybrid upgrade. This option to combine heat sources can be ideal in cases where comprehensive insulating and internal system upgrading (larger radiators and pipework) is either impractical or too expensive. There are a number of different combinations available using this approach, with the most suitable selected on a bespoke, site-by-site basis.

At JLA, we’re finding that many customers don’t want to go to the expense or endure the disruption required to improve and adapt a building’s heating/hot water distribution system to allow for a full low temperature system, powered by a standalone heat pump, that will keep everyone comfortable.

A hybrid approach means your building will only use the higher temperature of the traditional heat source when it’s needed – e.g., for high demand hot water production or a higher heating flow temperature on colder days.

Meanwhile, a state-of-the-art control system will switch between heat sources depending on demand and which is the most cost-effective to run at the time.

Will hybrid heating work in my property?

In general, the largest heat pump you can install on a standard (single phase) domestic electricity supply is 14kW. However, by using either a hybrid, high temperature or cascade system, there’s usually a solution that will heat most properties.

It’s a worth finding out what it would cost to upgrade your electricity supply to a three-phase supply. If the upgrade can be done affordably, it’ll greatly improve your electricity options for both heat pumps and electric vehicle charging. Your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) will be responsible for upgrades to your supply – simply ask your installer to help you get a quote.

A hybrid system is a great first step towards using a zero-carbon heat source, without the immediate need for costly building upgrades. Hybrid also leaves plenty of scope to expand your use of the heat pump in the future.

It’s worth knowing that grant funding isn’t currently available for a hybrid heating system that incorporates a boiler for space heating.

For more information on hybrid heating systems, simply visit the Energy Savings trust website, or contact JLA’s heating specialists.

Winter heating checklist

Use our Heating Checklist for the key things we'd recommend you consider during the coldest months, to keep things running smoothly and ensure boiler downtime is kept to a minimum.

The challenge: keeping essential laundry equipment running 24/7

Established in 2008, London’s Super Laundry has now grown to provide commercial laundry services to hundreds of clients across the capital. The company operates five state-of-the-art laundry units around the clock, laundering upwards of 50,000 towels a day and tens of millions of items every year.

As Super Laundry’s reputation and continued success rest on its ability to deliver sparkling white, hygienic towels to contract-agreed timescales, downtime simply isn’t an option. This makes reliable maintenance and quick repairs vital – and means it’s critical to have the right equipment partner on hand to help.

In the wake of supply chain delays caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as cross-border issues following the Brexit agreement, Super Laundry also need the continued assurance that that their supplier can source and deliver machine parts with minimal delays.

The solution: a partnership based on trust and reliability

A JLA customer for 15 years, Super Laundry recently re-signed an 8-year premium Total Care contract to enjoy JLA’s unrivalled equipment and support package for the foreseeable future, having around 65  washing machines and dryers in total. Total Care gives the company access to brand new washing machines and dryers with nothing to pay upfront, free installation, and ongoing maintenance and repairs – all covered by a simple monthly fee.

"A Total Care contract can feel a big commitment, but there’s complete trust – JLA put real care, time and effort into making sure that we’ve got the best deal and products for our needs. What’s more, they don’t disappear once the sale is made – it’s a partnership."

William Ray, Founder & Managing Director
By continuing to invest in its longstanding relationship with Super Laundry, JLA has developed a unique understanding of the business, as well as the need to keep equipment running smoothly. For this reason, JLA engineers are always on hand to fix any problems, quickly.

"JLA really stand out through the specialist knowledge and experience their engineers bring to our laundries. We’ve had the same engineer working with us for over 8 years, and see him more as part of our team!"

William Ray, Founder & Managing Director

Open communication between the businesses remains paramount. The Super Laundry team benefits from regular updates on parts arriving, as well as any scheduled engineer appointments. This openness has also helped in difficult circumstances, including the 2020 pandemic lockdowns.

"There was a time during the pandemic when we were really struggling to pay our bills, but JLA were incredibly supportive. We feel they always listen and act in the best interests of our business. I’d recommend them to anyone, and have done over the years."

William Ray, Founder & Managing Director
