If you’re hoping that a standard domestic washing machine will suffice in a care home environment, think again.

Not only do domestic appliances not reach the 82°C required for effective disinfection, but they also don’t comply with WRAS Category 5 for similar reasons. That’s putting aside the fact that they’re not designed for heavy use, lacking both the capacity and performance to handle continuous throughput.

Commercial Washing machine in Care Home

Why domestic machines fall short in a care home environment

Without meaning to sound blunt, domestic washers are not suitable for care home use. Here’s why:

  • Not WRAS Cat 5 compliant: That’s really all you need to know about why domestic appliances aren’t care home compatible. They lack any safeguards against backflow contamination, creating serious water safety risks.
  • No effective disinfection control: Washing machines designed for casual home use do not deliver the temperatures needed for effective disinfection.
  • Insufficient capacity: Since care homes require around 0.75 kg per resident per day, domestic appliances, graded for an average of 6-8 kg per load, do not have the capacity for continuous usage.
  • Poor long-term durability: Domestic washers are tested for around 5,000 cycles, while commercial washers are expected to deliver 30,000, highlighting the huge performance discrepancy between the two variants.

Table of Contents

The fatal flaws: Why domestic machines fail in care homes

While they may have less-intensive capacity requirements than, say, hospitals or healthcare facilities, even the smallest care homes have unique laundry processing requirements. That’s why you need a commercial laundry equipment that’s designed to meet these needs, not a domestic model that’s underpowered and ill-equipped.

With that said, let’s take a closer look at the core reasons why domestic washing machines are unsuitable for care home use.

Inadequate infection control

Consider that care homes handle soiled linens contaminated with bodily fluids that may contain bacteria, viruses and other harmful pathogens. When you launder these items, you need to be confident that they’re disinfected and cleaned thoroughly, with no risk of contamination.

Domestic appliances simply can’t deliver this. They don’t reach the required temperature to guarantee disinfection, nor do they have the functionality to reduce cross-contamination.

Insufficient capacity for care home operations

Having partnered with hundreds of care facilities around the UK, we understand their day-to-day capacity requirements. It’s a fact that domestic washers simply aren’t up to the task, particularly in multi-room care homes where wash cycles are required two or more times per day.

To provide some context here, understand that the average 40-bed care home has an average laundry requirement of 30 kg per day. Since the average domestic machine is rated up to an average of 6 kg per cycle, that’s already five loads per day, an inconceivable throughput without risking delays and a drop in the delivery of quality resident care.

Durability and reliability failures

Commercial washing machines are built for continuous use; domestic appliances are not. We’ve already touched on the fact that household washers have an expected lifespan of approximately 5,000 cycles, while commercial machines are expected to perform for six times longer, delivering up to 30,000 washes.

Of course, there’s a long-term impact to all this, be it downtime as a result of faults and breakdowns, or a general drop in performance and output. You’re also looking at higher maintenance costs, since domestic models are prone to faults under heavy use.

Critical regulatory compliance failures

Of course, the domestic versus commercial washing machine debate isn’t simply a matter of efficiency, performance and features. There are legal ramifications for not using the appropriate appliances in your care home laundry suite, which could easily land you in hot water with the CQC.

Water safety regulation violations

Using a domestic washing machine could mean your care home is not WRAS Category 5 compliant. This regulation safeguards water quality by eliminating the risk of backflow contamination.

Domestic washing machines do not have the same compliance requirements as commercial units, and, thus, they’re not suitable for care home use.

Health and safety non-compliance

Beyond WRAS 5, it’s highly likely that using domestic appliances in a commercial care home environment could mean you’re non-compliant on several pieces of H&S legislation.

Both the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and the most recent PUWER regulations cite the importance of using suitable, commercial-ready equipment, so domestic appliances simply won’t be up to standard, and should be viewed as non-compliant by the CQC.

Real-world consequences: The hidden costs of domestic machines

By now, you should have a pretty strong understanding of the risks of using domestic appliances in a care home laundry environment. But, just so everyone’s on the same page, here are the key considerations in black and white:

  • Risk of CQC inspection failure
  • Legal liability as a result of non-compliance and environment-related issues
  • Long-term reputational damage
  • Higher overall energy use
  • Outsourcing and staff overtime-related costs
  • Drop in resident care and accommodation quality
  • Risk of ill-health and virus-related outbreaks
  • Frequent downtime and high maintenance-related costs

What care homes need: Commercial washer requirements

While we’ve spent much of this guide reiterating the risks and consequences of using a non-compliant appliance in your care home laundry, it’s worth discussing the capabilities and functionality that you need instead, all of which you can get from a washer that’s built for commercial use.

With that said, let’s take a comparative look at domestic versus commercial washing machines in a care home laundry, highlighting the key capabilities to look for.

Making the switch from domestic to commercial laundry Equipments

We recognise that for some small-scale care homes, making the switch from a standard domestic laundry setup to a fully-compliant commercial-grade one might seem like a daunting process. However, provided you assess, plan, and implement the right changes, you should be able to deploy suitable equipment in an efficient, cost-effective way.

With that said, here are some top tips for making the switch to a commercial laundry setup:

  • Assess your current laundry setup: Which functionality and capabilities are you missing? And what changes are required to bring your laundry up to compliant standards?
  • Understand your budget: Are you able to purchase new equipment outright? Or would a serviced laundry equipment procurement contract like JLA Total Care be a better solution?
  • Partner with a trusted provider: As well as professional installation, the right commercial laundry equipment provider can provide a range of servicing, maintenance, and aftercare services to help you manage your commercial laundry space.

Expert insights: JLA’s care home laundry experience

Care homes are central to the work we do here at JLA, so we’ve amassed decades of experience in understanding the needs and requirements of these unique laundry spaces.

We know, for instance, that the right commercial equipment can make a huge difference to the daily workflow of care home laundry rooms, ensuring that staff aren’t burdened by time-intensive tasks that could otherwise be automated.

We’ve also come to learn that commercial washing machines and dryers can save our customers money in the long term, with reduced maintenance and servicing costs, lower overall energy use, and predictable day-to-day operations helping to create cost- and time-saving initiatives.

Of course, the number one reason for making the switch to a commercial laundry infrastructure is infection control, which is always a key priority for our customers. This issue sits at the heart of a care home’s overall H&S and compliance standards, so the right commercial laundry equipment can help manage and maintain it.

JLA can help you protect residents with proper equipment

In the case of care homes, making the switch from domestic appliances to commercial laundry equipment isn’t simply a nice-to-have, but a must-do. The risks are simply too great where inferior domestic equipment is concerned, so you need commercial appliances that you can rely on for day-to-day efficiency, safety and performance.

If you need to upgrade your laundry space ASAP, JLA can help. Contact us today on 0808 239 7578, and we’ll get you started.

 FAQs

Why can’t domestic washing machines be used in care homes?

Domestic washing machines aren’t compliant with care home laundry facilities, since they lack the infection control and water hygiene capabilities of their commercial counterparts.

What temperature do care home washing machines need to reach?

A temperature of 82°C+ is required to ensure reliable infection control during a standard laundry wash cycle.

What is WRAS Category 5 compliance, and why is it required?

WRAS Category 5 is a compliance measure used to ensure that water systems are protected from the highest risk of backflow contamination. It’s required to maintain optimal water hygiene and reduce hazardous materials in the public water supply.

How much laundry capacity does a care home need?

It’s estimated that care homes have a daily laundry capacity of around 0.75 kg per resident. So, if a care facility has 100 permanent residents, that’s 75 kg per day.

What are the legal consequences of using unsuitable laundry equipment?

Care homes risk the combined wrath of the CQC and the HSE by failing to use appropriate laundry equipment. This could culminate in fines, facility closures, or even imprisonment in the most serious cases.

Can domestic machines be upgraded to meet care home requirements?

No. Replacing domestic appliances with suitable commercial counterparts is the only feasible way of ensuring that a care home laundry is safe, efficient, and compliant.

For care homes, hotels, and other organisations with high laundry throughput, a large capacity washing machine delivers the volume and performance required for optimal efficiency.

Large washing machines have a capacity of 20kg+, with some XL units capable of processing loads of up to 180kg. Of course, size isn’t everything, which is why you can expect the same levels of efficiency, durability and performance from these machines as you can from other JLA commercial laundry appliances.

What is a large capacity washing machine?

Commercial washing machines labelled “high capacity” feature a large drum, robust construction and a wide door opening, handling big loads with little effort. They’re capable of processing between 20-180kg of laundry in a single cycle – significantly more than the largest domestic model.

In high-volume laundry suites, large washers prove a real difference-maker. Not only do they power through the greatest loads, but they do so on a continuous, round-the-clock basis. That’s thanks to their premium build quality and construction, which promise lasting durability.

Choosing the right capacity washing machine for your business

Washing machine weight capacities can be confusing, and bigger doesn’t mean better. You need to choose the washer that’s best suited to the needs of your business, considering the following to get things right:

  • Business type: Large washing machines are best suited to organisations with high laundry throughput – be it hotels, hospitals, care homes or similar.
  • Load type: Of course, what you’re washing matters too, especially in the case of bulky items like duvets, flatwork, staff uniforms or multiple towels.
  • Volume and frequency: Large commercial washers are built with “always on” operation in mind. They’re ready to process the largest loads, cycle after cycle.

Key features and benefits

Size isn’t all that large load washing machines offer. Our high-capacity commercial washers are packed with features that make light work of even the toughest laundry tasks, while also delivering maximum durability and performance.

Key features include:

  • Flexible programs: Get the best results from every wash with programmable cycles that accommodate a variety of load types and laundry weights.
  • Optimal efficiency: All JLA commercial washing machines are built with energy and water saving in mind. Our XL washers are no different.
  • Ergonomic design: Easy-grab door handles and durable control panels mean our large washers are always simple to use, meaning no steep learning curve for you and your team.
  • SMART features: Some large washers fall into our SMART range, bringing advanced technologies and best-in-class innovation to the table.
  • Additional capabilities: Whatever your requirements, our range of high-capacity washers includes barrier, coin-operated, and stackable machines, suited to any laundry task.

FAQs

What is classed as a large capacity washing machine?

Large washing machines have a capacity of 20kg+, with some XL models capable of processing loads of up to 180kg. Generally, at JLA, we classify large commercial washers as machines with a load capacity of 20-70kg, and industrial-grade, extra-large machines as 70-180kg.

What size machine do I need for a large business?

We recommend that large businesses with a high laundry throughput opt for a washing machine with a load capacity of 20kg+. Of course, you also need to consider volume, frequency and laundry type, along with specialist features like coin-operation, barrier technology, and stacking capabilities.

Can large machines wash duvets and bedding?

Yes, certainly. 15kg+ commercial washing machines can handle bulky items like bedding, towels and duvets. However, if you regularly process these kinds of loads, we recommend a large washing machine that’s engineered for continuous daily use.

Is bigger always better?

In the case of commercial washing machines: no, certainly not. If you have light laundry requirements, there’s little point in investing in a large washing machine. Don’t forget that commercial laundry equipment comes in all shapes and sizes, accommodating the needs of businesses big and small.

Learn the core differences between commercial and industrial washing machines, so you can find the appropriate laundry equipment for your business.

What defines a commercial vs industrial washing machine?

The main difference between commercial and industrial washers is the load capacity they’re capable of handling, coupled with their expected daily usage.

Typically, commercial washers handle smaller cycles less frequently, though they’re still a powerful ally for your business. JLA offers commercial washing machines for sale across a variety of sectors, including care homes, hospitality businesses and launderettes.

Meanwhile, industrial-grade washers are capable of processing XL loads on a near-continuous basis, making them better suited to operations with round-the-clock laundry requirements – whether hospitals or hotels.

Key takeaways: Commercial vs industrial washers

  • Usage intensity and load capacity: Commercial washers typically handle loads of 7–32kg on a daily, but not continuous, basis. Meanwhile, their industrial counterparts can deliver 40–200kg+ of laundering power 24/7.
  • Programmability: Typically, commercial washers offer a variety of preset cycles and limited customisation; by contrast, industrial units are fully configurable and can be integrated into automated laundry workflows.
  • Hygiene controls: While commercial washers feature hygiene-boosting technologies like OTEX disinfection, industrial-grade appliances can include barrier designs that physically reduce the risk of cross-contamination.
  • Cost of ownership: Naturally, industrial washing machines are costlier than their commercial counterparts, requiring more energy and resources for day-to-day operation. However, it’s important to consider that industrial units are designed for larger businesses, while commercial washers are ideal for SMEs.
  • JLA range threshold: JLA offers light-to-medium-duty commercial washers for general daily use, alongside heavy-duty industrial washing machines for the most demanding laundry applications.

They differ from standard domestic appliances in their design, build quality, capacity, and the features they offer, making them the perfect solution for frequent day-to-day use in business environments like care homes, guest houses, hospitality venues, and on-site laundries.

Typically, commercial washing machines are front-loading appliances, comparable in design to their domestic counterparts. However, some models offer barrier technology to maintain peak levels of hygiene and cleanliness, so these require different setup and handling procedures.

In terms of capacity and performance, commercial washers generally offer a maximum load range of 7–32kg, depending on the model. They’re constructed from reinforced components and feature higher G-force spin speeds, delivering faster cycle times to meet your commercial laundry demands.

Other core characteristics and benefits of commercial washers include:

  • Ergonomic controls and all-around ease of use
  • Compatible with hot and cold water connections, as well as auto-dosing systems
  • Models like the JLA 98 washer are ideal for compact laundry environments

What makes a washing machine industrial?

Industrial washing machines are heavy-duty laundry appliances that deliver high-volume performance on a continuous basis. Capable of handling loads from 40kg to 200kg+, they’re the ultimate ally for businesses with high-demand laundry requirements, including hospitals, large-scale hotels, centralised laundries, and manufacturing plants.

Featuring heavier chassis, advanced load-bearing mechanisms, and reinforced bearings, industrial washing machines are built to power through even the toughest on-site laundry tasks. That’s alongside advanced cycle options and onboard technology like data logging and customisable programming, delivering next-level efficiency and hygiene.

Given their scale, size, performance, and output, industrial washing machines require professional installation and regular ongoing maintenance. JLA provides full-service aftercare to meet these challenges, ensuring you get maximum performance and efficiency from your machine.

How sector and application affect your choice

Choosing between a commercial or industrial washing machine depends largely on the needs of your business. Each of these appliance types is suited to different industry sectors, for example:

Hospitality (hotels, restaurants, holiday parks)

Hospitality businesses may require either a light commercial washer or an industrial unit, depending on the scale of their operations. For instance, guest houses, pubs, and restaurants may only require a commercial unit, while an industrial model may better meet the demands of large-scale hotels.

Care homes and healthcare

Since both commercial and industrial washing machines provide enhanced hygiene capabilities like ozone disinfection and barrier technology, healthcare facilities and care homes should consider capacity and usage requirements when deciding between the two.

Education, student accommodation, and housing

Commercial units are typically sufficient for education and accommodation providers, where washers are generally used for frequent day-to-day laundry needs. Consider enhanced features like coin operation, as well as ease of use for end users.

Large-scale commercial laundries and linen plants

Typically, linen-processing plants and centralised commercial laundry suites require industrial-grade appliances, as these deliver round-the-clock performance cycle after cycle. Such centres may also wish to consider other industry-ready technologies, including rotary and roller irons.

Commercial and Industrial Washing Machines FAQs

What is the difference between a commercial washing machine and a domestic one?

Commercial washing machines offer superior build quality, components, and onboard features compared with their domestic counterparts. They’re designed for light-to-medium-duty use in business environments and are constructed from durable components to ensure longevity and performance.

When do I need an industrial washing machine instead of a commercial model?

Industrial washers are recommended in environments where heavy-duty laundering is required on a continuous basis. They’re also equipped with hygiene-boosting features, such as barrier technology, making them a good fit where cross-contamination prevention is paramount.

Can I use domestic machines in a small B&B or care home?

Yes, it’s possible. However, you may not benefit from the capacity, performance, and hygiene-enhancing features that commercial models bring.

How long do commercial washers last?

Commercial washing machines are constructed from durable components like stainless steel, so they generally last much longer than even the best-in-class domestic equivalents. JLA commercial washing machines typically last 10–15 years with regular maintenance and servicing, based on frequent daily use.
